UNIMIB Invites Living Lab Ideas

Empowering innovation through real-world collaboration within the INVEST European University Alliance

The University of Milano-Bicocca (UNIMIB), under the leadership of Prof. Salvatore Torrisi, recently hosted a collaborative meeting to invite new ideas and contributions for the identification of Living Lab projects aligned with the thematic priorities of the INVEST European University Alliance.

As defined during the meeting, Living Labs are open innovation ecosystems set in real-life environments, where users co-create solutions alongside researchers, institutions, and local actors. These initiatives integrate research and innovation directly within communities, placing citizens at the center of the innovation process.

Focus Theme: Healthy and Sustainable Urban Environment
Following discussions across departments and stakeholders, UNIMIB has identified the broad theme of “Healthy and Sustainable Urban Environment” as its central Living Lab area within the INVEST framework. Three innovative projects have already been selected:

  1. Monitoring Air Quality in the Bicocca District (City of Milan)
    Led by Prof. Paride Mantecca
A citizen-science approach to tracking air pollutants and raising awareness on urban air quality.

  2. Sustainable Urban Mobility – Bicocca Mobility Solutions
    Led by Prof. Matteo Colleoni
Research-based strategies to enhance accessibility and promote greener modes of transport.

  3. Solar Energy Solutions: Monitoring & Innovation in the Bicocca District
Led by Prof. Simona Binetti & Prof. Maurizio Acciarri
Piloting new solar technologies while monitoring their efficiency and integration in urban spaces.

Connecting Learning with Impact
These Living Labs also complement the development of a new Joint Bachelor Degree in Sustainable Energy, co-created by UNIMIB and partner universities within INVEST. For students, the integration of Living Lab projects means:

  • Engaging in hands-on, interdisciplinary learning
  • Collaborating with researchers, city officials, and community members
  • Tackling real-world societal and environmental challenges
  • Building essential skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and civic engagement

By embedding Living Lab experiences directly into curricula, the INVEST Alliance is bridging education, research, and community impact, cultivating a generation of graduates who are not only academically prepared but also socially responsible and innovation-driven.

UNIMIB’s call for Living Lab ideas is a powerful step toward building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future, starting right in the heart of Milan.
