As part of the INVEST4EXCELLENCE project’s capacity building actions, a new academic paper titled “Fostering Education for Sustainable Development in Higher Education: A Case Study on Sustainability Competences in Research, Development and Innovation (RDI)” has been published in the Journal of Sustainability. Authored by Tiina Muhonen, Liisa Timonen, and Kristiina Väänänen from Karelia University of Applied Sciences, this study explores how higher education institutions (HEIs) can enhance education for sustainable development (ESD) and strategic human resource development.

The research focuses on identifying and developing sustainable and responsible RDI competences within the INVEST university alliance. Through qualitative case studies and focus group interviews, the study compares the views of education professionals and stakeholders on current and future competence needs. It highlights the importance of disciplinary competences, systems-thinking, and strategic-thinking for a holistic sustainability transformation.

The findings provide valuable insights for aligning higher education curricula with ESD, supporting the development of sustainability competences, and fostering stakeholder collaboration. This study serves as a reference point for HEIs aiming to integrate sustainability into their educational and developmental frameworks.
